PRP Therapy

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is a form of regenerative medicine. It’s a blood product created from a sample of your own blood that contains a high concentration of platelets. After an injury, your body mobilizes its self-healing powers to repair the damage.

Your platelets are best known for blood clotting to stop the bleeding, but they also contain specialized proteins and growth factors that also repair the damaged tissue.

PRP therapy harnesses your body’s natural healing abilities and delivers them directly to the damaged tissue that needs extra support.

Am I a good candidate for PRP therapy?

When you come in for care at Scott Wagner Integrated Medicine, the integrated medical team works together to ensure you get the best treatment for your condition. PRP therapy benefits many musculoskeletal problems.

The team may consider you a candidate for PRP therapy to support healing and alleviate pain caused by:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Strains and sprains
  • Sports injuries

The team may also suggest PRP therapy to support healing after surgical repair of your musculoskeletal injury or condition.

How do I prepare for PRP therapy?

The team at Scott Wagner Integrated Medicine provides specific instructions on how to prepare for your PRP therapy at your consultation. The team may ask that you stop taking anti-inflammatory medications or supplements before your injections.

PRP therapy induces an inflammatory response to support the healing process, and your anti-inflammatory medication may counteract the therapeutic benefits.

What happens during PRP therapy?

The team conducts your PRP therapy at the office using ultrasound-guided imagery. First, they take a sample of blood from your arm to prepare your PRP, then inject the PRP directly into your diseased or damaged tissue.

You may remain at the office for up to 30 minutes following your PRP therapy for monitoring, and then you're discharged home. There's no downtime following your PRP therapy.

How long does it take to get results from PRP therapy?

PRP results vary from patient to patient and may depend on the severity of your injury or disease. However, most patients experience an improvement in pain and function within several weeks after their injection.

The team schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. They may also add physical rehabilitation and chiropractic care to your treatment plan to support the healing process.
